Michèle Rousseau, Chair and Managing Director of the BRGM, and Marc Chaussidon, Director of the Paris Institute of Planetary Physics, signed the first framework agreement between the two organisations on 18 January 2019.
This 4-year agreement aims to strengthen the already significant scientific cooperation between the BRGM and the IPGP on both volcanic and seismic risk monitoring and geoscience research.
Common topics covering a broad spectrum of the Earth and Environmental Sciences
Scientific cooperation between the BRGM and IPGP has become well established over the years, both in research and education.
It has produced studies, analyses and applications of the data acquired during research projects and through joint participation in European projects.
The new partnership aims to accelerate scientific cooperation on the following major topics:
- Seismic and volcanic risks: collaborative studies on seismic and volcanic risks in the Caribbean and La Réunion and research on seismology, ground movements and tsunamis;
- Environmental topics: collaborative research on the characterisation, measurements and behaviour of nano-pollutants, radon and metallic pollutants in the environment;
- Energy and subsurface technologies: research on geothermal energy, deep underground storage of gases (CO2, H2S) and borehole monitoring methods;
- Geoscience, geophysical innovation and the deep biosphere.
Reciprocal cooperation for teaching in higher education and training is also planned.
This is apartnership with a highly complementary institute of excellence, from which we anticipate many fruitful prospects for the future.
Some BRGM-IPGP projects in 2019
- Seismology and modelling of gravitational processes and tsunamis: modelling torrential processes for assessments of associated risks (thesis begun in October 2017);
- From hazards to risks (earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis):
- study of tsunamis triggered by gravitational destabilisation: applications to coastline issues in France, including the Caribbean, and use in the Caribbean of a range of automated tools for estimating earthquake outcomes to support crisis management;
- updated estimations and zoning of volcanic hazards in the south of Basse-Terre.
An important agreement that opens up numerous prospects with the BRGM, an authoritative public institution in the Earth Sciences and a natural and historic partner for the IPGP.
