GRETA: contributing to local energy independence

12.19.2016
The BRGM is partnering the GRETA project to support the development of geothermal heat production in the Alpine area, which is financed by the European Regional Development Fund via its Espace Alpin programme.

The GRETA project (Near-Surface Geothermal Resources in the Territory of the Alpine Space) is supporting the development of geothermal heat production in the Alpine area.

Supporting the development of geothermal heat production in the Alps

GRETA has three aims:

  • to improve knowledge on the geographical distribution of near-surface geothermal potential,
  • to exchange know-how and identify good practice on a transnational basis,
  • to develop a knowledge base to support the integration of near-surface geothermal potential in local planning.

These aims will be achieved by producing maps of near-surface geothermal potential, which will serve as decision-support tools for the integration of geothermal energy in public policy-making. They will be available to both public and private players involved in planning for the geographical development of near-surface geothermal energy potential.

Guidelines will also be developed to promote the harmonisation of administrative procedures and to identify criteria for optimising the potential of near-surface geothermal energy in the Alpine area, for purposes such as seasonal heat storage in mountain villages, de-icing roads, etc. Applications such as these should increase the use of geothermal energy in the Alpine area.

PARTNERS

The 3-year GRETA project (2016-2018) involves 12 partners from Austria, Germany, Italy, France, Slovenia and Switzerland, including the BRGM.

The GRETA project is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund via the Espace Alpin programme for transboundary cooperation centred on the Alps. Co-funding amounts to a total of  €2,308,232.91.
