Heliborne geophysical survey of La Réunion: identification of potential sites for a non-hazardous waste storage facility

The BRGM used the results of the ReunEM heliborne geophysical survey of La Réunion made in 2014 to identify potential sites for a non-hazardous waste storage facility in the north-east of the island.

Objectives

The intermunicipal waste treatment agency for the north-east of La Réunion (SYDNE), which is responsible for waste treatment in the area managed by CINOR and CIREST, needed updated information on the potential of the area (9 municipalities in the north and east of the island) for a non-hazardous waste storage facility. The SYDNE therefore commissioned a multicriteria GIS analysis from the BRGM to identify potentially favourable sites for facilities of this type. The sites identified were then ranked against selection criteria using ground survey data and recent electromagnetic data acquired during the ReunEM heliborne geophysical survey of La Réunion conducted in 2014.

Work programme

The results of the ReunEM project (heliborne electromagnetic survey data providing information on the electrical resistivity of formations down to about 300 m in depth) were used to clarify the geological context underlying the sites identified.  At this stage in the study, the ReunEM electromagnetic data were combined with analyses of the terrain to define the geological component of the site prospecting study, which is fundamental to the establishment of waste storage facilities.

Results obtained

Following the successive analysis phases, the sites identified were ranked to enable the SYDNE to select the main site(s) of interest for the next study phases and the design phase.
