The Carnot Institutes network

The Carnot Institutes network has 34 members committed to innovation in business. As a nationwide multi-disciplinary research network, it works to promote business partnerships and technology transfers across all French regions.

The purpose of the Carnot Institutes is to build closer links between public research and private enterprise to meet needs for innovation in businesses that will boost their activities and competitiveness.

34 Carnot Institutes across the French Regions

The Carnot Institutes network was set up in 2006 and has become a powerful tool for partnership-based research and transfers to industry, thanks to:

  • its nationwide scope and strong roots in regional activities, with 34 institutes across the French regions,
  • activities employing 15% of all human resources in French public research,
  • over 50% of all business financing for R&D contracts with public research organisations
  • 17% annual growth in research contracts since 2010, with increased efforts towards SMEs and “mid-cap” companies.

Over 7000 R&D contracts per year

Each year, more than 7000 R&D contracts are signed between businesses and Carnot Institutes, as well as numerous agreements for joint participation in collaborative R&D projects (under European programmes or thematic ANR programmes, through competitiveness clusters, etc.).

Research & Development for businesses of all sizes

Companies calling on the Carnot Institutes can be of any size: large companies, “mid-caps” (250 to 5 000 employees), SMEs, very small businesses (less than 10 employees) and also enterprise creation projects. Public organisations (local and regional authorities and agencies) also call on the R&D competences of the Carnot Institutes.
