First BRGM-UPPA agreement on energy and the environment

02.08.2019
The BRGM and the University of Pau and the Adour Basin signed an initial framework agreement on 23 January in Pau. The aim is to develop joint research on geo-energy and the environment.

Signed on 23 January 2019 by Pierre Toulhoat, the BRGM's Deputy Managing Director, and Mohamed Amara, Chair of the UPPA, this 4-year agreement sets out the framework for cooperation between the BRGM and the University of Pau and the Adour Basin, with the aim of strengthening the already existing links between the BRGM and the university's I-Site working on energy and environmental solutions (E2S-UPPA).

Research projects on energy and the environment

This agreement aims to develop new common research projects responding to subsurface energy and environmental challenges, with a particular focus on:

  • studies of geological processes and subsurface properties for a range of energy applications (geothermal, underground storage, CO2 capture and storage);
  • industrial bioleaching processes;
  • coastal erosion.

Academic and industrial partnerships

The collaborative work undertaken by the BRGM and UPPA will also ensure a good balance between fundamental and applied research, in a context where the BRGM wishes to better anchor the research developed from its strategic orientations in the world of academic excellence.

In particular, it must ensure the development of partnerships with industry both in France and internationally. Both establishments are members of the Carnot Institute network, which encourages partnership-based scientific research geared to the world of industry.

This agreement must also enrich the training offer for students and professionals.

Main BRGM-UPPA projects for 2019

Collaboration with the LaTEP Laboratory on thermal and energy engineering and processes, a member of the ISIFoR Carnot Institute co-supervised by Total: the BRGM is partnering the ANR CARPHYMCHEAU project on characterisation of physical and materials phenomena in geothermal fluid exchangers.

Collaboration with the SIAME engineering sciences laboratory for mechanical and electrical engineering applications, a member of the ISIFoR Carnot Institute: the BRGM is co-funding programmes on the continental ecosphere (ANR on processes and modelling and GIS 3SP on pollution and ecotoxicity risks) and partnering numerous research projects.

Association with the E2S consortium for energy and environment solutions, which is working to promote  relationships with socio-economic partners:  the BRGM and ISTO are co-funding the 3 winning projects under the specific call for projects on "Sourcing and Scientific Challenges" (thermodynamic characterisation of the pressurised CO2-impurities system (NOx, N2, SO2, O2, H2), modelling of batch biolixiviation and role of thermophysical processes in reactive transport systems induced by injecting CO2 into deep saline aquifers.
