Signed on 23 January 2019 by Pierre Toulhoat, the BRGM's Deputy Managing Director, and Mohamed Amara, Chair of the UPPA, this 4-year agreement sets out the framework for cooperation between the BRGM and the University of Pau and the Adour Basin, with the aim of strengthening the already existing links between the BRGM and the university's I-Site working on energy and environmental solutions (E2S-UPPA).

Research projects on energy and the environment

This agreement aims to develop new common research projects responding to subsurface energy and environmental challenges, with a particular focus on:

  • studies of geological processes and subsurface properties for a range of energy applications (geothermal, underground storage, CO2 capture and storage);
  • industrial bioleaching processes;
  • coastal erosion.

Academic and industrial partnerships

The collaborative work undertaken by the BRGM and UPPA will also ensure a good balance between fundamental and applied research, in a context where the BRGM wishes to better anchor the research developed from its strategic orientations in the world of academic excellence.

In particular, it must ensure the development of partnerships with industry both in France and internationally. Both establishments are members of the Carnot Institute network, which encourages partnership-based scientific research geared to the world of industry.

This agreement must also enrich the training offer for students and professionals.
