Michèle Rousseau, the BRGM Chair and Executive Director, and Arnaud Leroy, the ADEME Chair and Executive Director, renewed the framework agreement between the two organisations on 10 April 2019. This will strengthen their scientific cooperation on soil and water issues. Under the agreement, the BRGM and ADEME will pursue their work on efficient resource management,  with an additional emphasis on public health concerns.

This 4-year framework agreement between the two organisations strengthens their longstanding cooperation since 1987 and confirms their role in supporting the development of public policies, both in France and in Europe.

New priorities to meet the challenges of the energy transition

The areas of cooperation are in line with each organisation's the strategic guidelines and are organised around three priority topics:

  • Geothermal energy: deep and shallow geothermal energy and associated energy storage.
  • Management of polluted sites, soils and sediments: studies on environmental mechanisms, environmental metrology, design and development of ecotechnologies and methods for the conversion of mining sites into photovoltaic power plants, development and distribution of a guide to good practice and relevant standards.
  • Efficient management of materials  to support the developing circular economy: criticality of materials in the energy efficiency and renewable energy fields, design and development of ecotechnologies (waste sorting and recycling processes), safe waste re-use practices, environmental assessment tools. In parallel, the agreement provides for the development of international activities, particularly exports of geothermal energy and cooperation with Africa, Asia and Latin America.  The agreement also includes training, communication and information components.
