AquaNES : developing systems for natural wastewater treatment

Under the EU Horizon 2020 programme, the BRGM is taking part in the AquaNES project, which is developing water treatment systems that combine industrial and natural methods.

Aims of the project

As part of the EU Horizon 2020 programme, the AquaNES project involves thirty scientific, industrial and academic partners working in the water and wastewater treatment sector.

AquaNES is a three-year project launched in 2016 to develop innovative water and wastewater treatment methods that combine industrial and natural processes. By demonstrating the impacts and advantages of the different systems investigated, the project aims to promote more sustainable water purification techniques to address water deficits and surpluses and the presence of micropollutants in the water cycle.

The project teams are looking to demonstrate the efficiency of combined Natural-Engineered treatment Systems (cNES) to treat wastewater, to prove that these systems reduce operational costs and energy needs and, finally, to identify market opportunities for cNES in Europe and the rest of the world.

Testing and comparing different wastewater treatment systems that combine natural and industrial processes

With a view to sustainable solutions to water scarcity, the management of surplus urban wastewater and contaminant transfers in the water cycle, AquaNES is comparing treatment methods based on existing natural systems, including environmental and socio-economic perspectives. In the project, natural treatments (riverbank filtration, aquifer recharge systems and artificial wetlands) are combined with physico-chemical technologies (active carbon, membranes and ozonation).

The project covers a wide range of regional, climatic and hydrogeological conditions through its thirteen pilot sites in Europe, India and Israel.
