CO2GeoNet, the Network of Excellence on the geological storage of CO2, was founded in 2004 by 13 public research institutes across 7 European countries. It brings together more than 300 researchers with the multidisciplinary expertise needed to address all aspects of CO2 storage.

Active in the domains of joint research, training, scientific advice, information and communication, CO2GeoNet is paving the way for the efficient and safe geological storage of CO2 through its independent nature and scientific excellence.

CO2GeoNet was created in 2004 as a Network of Excellence under the EC 6th Framework Programme (FP) for 5 years. In 2008, the Network became a non-profit Association under French law to ensure durability. In 2013, CO2GeoNet opened up its membership to new organizations to enable a wider, pan European coverage and to continue collaboration with former members of  CGS Europe, an EC 7th FP project coordinated by BRGM and in which CO2GeoNet participated.
